Note: This LP is the same as the original vinyl album and contains all of the conversations between Ray and the stage manager as well as the audience contributions. I bought this LP from the 1960 Atlanta concert. She blew me away then and she still does today. To me, that IS Ray Charles. In the introduction to "Night Time Is The Right Time," Ray says, "... and Miss Marjorie Hendricks is going to help out with the singing..." and — heavens! – how she helps out! Turn up the volume and lie down. This album is just great.

Ray toured with his band in the 1950's and they performed at a concert at Atlanta's Herndon Stadium. An engineer at radio station WAOK made a recording of it on a single-track tape recorder using a single microphone. This recording was later broadcast. The response from radio listeners was overwhelming and eventually culminated in the release of the Atlanta album.

It's one of the most extraordinary albums ever. For one thing, it's almost unbelievable given how it was received. You can hear the band perfectly, clearly and balanced, the audience can also be heard shouting, coughing, etc., you get the exchange between musicians and audience as well as the extraordinary energy of a typical concert where Ray Charles played in front of his own audience.

Many of the tracks were or became classics, known to every funk and blues musician across the country as well as most of the populace. Ray Charles was admired like no other musician. This is the most cathartic of Ray Charles' records of all. On two tracks, "The Right Time" and "Tell The Truth" - both featuring the Raelettes' lead singer Marjorie Hendricks - the music transcends the rules of art and becomes heavily shamanistic. This remains one of the greatest Rhythm & Blues albums out there.

Recorded May 1959 at Herndon Stadium, Atlanta, USA by Ivan Miles
