Re-release of the American jazz tenor saxophonist's classic 1961 debut album. BOOKER died young, at 39, of kidney disease, just as he was beginning a new wave of sonic experimentation. He was a tenor who played the blues as if it came from within, taking inspiration from field hollers as much as bebop. He was compared to Coltrane - who made many similar game decisions - but he had a different way of playing his blues. His debut LP, THE BOOK COOKS, shows that he arrived on the solo scene essentially fully formed; he would change in the late '60s, but this LP was a roadmap for the first part of his bandleading career.
