Idris Muhammad is an American jazz drummer and bandleader and one of the most sampled drummers in contemporary music. His resume includes nearly 500 recordings spanning the genre spectrum and 12 studio albums as bandleader, including 1976's House Of The Rising Sun. The album was arranged by David Matthews, also known as the leader of the Dave Matthews Band (DMB), and produced by Creed Taylor, founder of CTI Records. The track "Sudan" was arranged by jazz trumpeter Tom Harrell. The album features several guest appearances from New York studio aces including Joe Beck, Don Grolnick, David Sanborn, Fred Wesley and Michael Brecker to name a few.
This is the strongest jazz recording of drummer Idris Muhammad's as leader. Muhammad, who was often heard in funky or more commercial surroundings, shines in this reduced line-up and shows what he has learned from the bands in his hometown of New Orleans. Additionally, both the underrated Coleman and Sanders are at their best here on the originals and standards, as is "I Want To Talk About You," during which Sanders has some of his trademark outbursts letting everyone know he's not John Coltrane. Highly recommended.
