George Avakian, who directed a range of ethnic music in Colombia under the direction of ethno-musicologist Alan Lomax, wanted Gil Evans to work with flamenco in particular, as he appreciated Spanish composers. In fact, Miles himself had discovered Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez" and flamenco at the same time - thanks to an anthology brought back from Spain by actress Beverly Bentley and a concert Frances Taylor took him to.
The result was majestic music in which Gil Evans sidestepped the kitsch of Rodrigo's original score and held his ground with the help of Miles' imposing trumpet. Along with the Adagio from the "Concierto", Gil Evans borrowed Manuel de Falla's "Will O' The Wisp" and adapted "The Pan Piper" from a panpipe aria recorded by Lomax in Galicia and "Saeta" from a ritual chant of the same name used to accompany the accompaniment sung by the brass bands that accompanied the processions in Seville during Holy Week. In this last track and in "Solea", Miles drew on the fervor of flamenco singing while at the same time estranging himself from all traces of folklore.

Miles Davis is certainly the most successful of all jazz legends. Even if his recordings were occasionally controversial, everyone agreed on one thing: Sketches Of Spain from 1959 is one of the most important jazz works of all. Pieces such as Concierto De Aranjuez, Saeta and Solea, with which Miles Davis underpinned his undisputed claim to the throne of jazz Olympus, testify to the incomparable virtuosity of this exceptional musician.
