This powerful work reimagines songs made famous by the gospel icon who captivated a nation with his voice.
While on Jesup Wagon Lewis used his transformative talents to shed new light on Renaissance man George Washington Carver, here the saxophonist does the same for gospel music force of nature Mahalia Jackson. And this time it's something personal, because Lewis experienced her music in his childhood, encouraged by a grandmother who received Mahalia's singing like lightning from above. This work is much more than an homage, it is "really a three-way conversation between Mahalia, my grandmother and me."
The challenge was to transform these songs into jazz, into the diversity of the 21st century. century. What James and the band [ William Parker bass, Chad Taylor drums, Kirk Knuffke cornet, Chris Hoffman cello ] do with this music is wonderful.
